There are two probes for the multimeter, one is red (with the symbol '+') and the other is black (with the symbol '-'). The red one is placed in the hole marked with 'V /Ω', and black in hole marked with 'COM'.
The displayed value should be 0.000V before inspection, adjust the voltage to gear 20V DC.
Clean the terminals and surrorunding areas, contact the probes of the multimeter with the terminals of the battery (red probe with positive terminal, black probe with negative terminal), check the value of voltage displayed on the meter.
