How to Choose the Best Car Battery Replacement
July 18 2022

How do you know which battery is right for your vehicle? Here are some of the key factors you should consider. If you are unsure of the requirements in any of these areas, check your vehicle manual or talk to your mechanic for the original equipment (OE) manufacturer’s recommendations.

Battery Pack Size

This refers to the battery size that will best fit the physical dimensions, terminal locations and type required for your vehicle. Pack size is typically based on your vehicle’s model and engine type.

Battery Technology: Deep Cycle vs. Starting Battery

Different vehicles and driving styles can place varying demands on your battery. It’s important to first determine whether a standard flooded battery will meet your vehicle’s needs, or whether a deep-cycle or AGM battery is required.

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

CCA is a rating used in the battery industry to define a battery's ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. When the battery is fully charged in the environment of -18°C, the constant current discharge is performed, and the battery voltage drops to 7.2V at 30 seconds. This current is called the cold cranking current. It represents the low-temperature starting performance of the battery. It can reflect the internal structure and process of the battery.

Battery Reserve Capacity (RC), Amp Hour and C20

Reserve Capacity is a general indicator of how long a new, fully charged battery can continue to operate essential accessories if the vehicle’s alternator fails. Amp hour and C20 capacity are indicators of how much energy is stored in a battery.

Compare Car Battery Quality, Brand, & Age

To work well, a battery should be well-made and fresh. To ensure you purchase a high-quality battery, check out its industry reputation and ratings. When it comes to the specific battery you get, make sure you’re getting a fresh one, since batteries lose performance over time (even in storage).

Opt for the Longest Battery Warranty

You want a battery that’s guaranteed. A good warranty not only demonstrates a manufacturer's confidence in their product, but also helps protect you if anything goes wrong.

If your battery is under warranty, make sure to take a peek at its condition. Signs of neglect such as low-water levels or improper installation can void some warranties. By getting one of our expert technicians to install your new battery and keep it running smooth with regular checkups, you could save yourself a headache (and significant expense) down the road.

Additional Car Battery Tips

● Installing used car batteries can be dangerous. Buy new batteries whenever possible.

● If your battery begins to fail, start searching for a replacement immediately.

● A new car will normally need a battery change after 3 to 4 years.

● Your car's battery may be covered by your vehicle's warranty; check on this before purchasing a new battery from a retailer other than your car dealer.

● You must check your battery regularly to keep it in good shape. Keep the terminals, cables, and connectors clean and free of corrosion. Use a wire brush and a baking soda/water mixture to scrub away any accumulated whitish, greenish, or bluish material on the battery terminals.

● Check your battery connections frequently. Make sure that the cables and posts are securely connected.

● Consider keeping a portable battery charger inside your car for emergency use.

● Jump-starting a dying battery can be helpful if you are stranded, but do not attempt this without first researching the correct procedure. Incorrect wiring connections could cause damage to your engine.
